Founded in 1973, the Yale Gospel Choir is an undergraduate musical group at Yale University seeking to spread the message of Jesus Christ through song. We minister throughout the Yale and New Haven communities, as well as domestically and internationally during our Spring Tour.
About Us
The Choir's purpose is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the ministry of song. This purpose is fulfilled through engagements and concerts in the Yale-New Haven area and surrounding communities and by means of an annual Spring Tour. YGC maintains a membership of 30-40 enthusiastic singers and musicians annually. The choir supports a family-oriented atmosphere -- a community of brothers and sisters in Christ.
Organization
As an undergraduate organization, YGC is run entirely by Yale College undergrads, though membership is also extended to graduate students and persons from the greater New Haven community. During the academic year, the Choir rehearses weekly in Yale's Afro-American Cultural Center.
History
The Yale Gospel Choir was founded as an undergraduate organization at Yale in 1973. It was formed under the guidance of Irene Jackson, a faculty member in the African-American and Music Departments, as an adjunct to the Black Church at Yale.
